The Jasper School District was chosen as one of 15 schools statewide to receive a grant aimed at implementing the Farm to School Initiative. To enhance nutrition and education within the Jasper School District, a dedicated team attended a Farm to School Retreat at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute in Morrilton on June 17, 18, and 19. The team immersed themselves in intensive training sessions and collaborative workshops focused on implementing a Farm to School Program at the Jasper School District.
"This grant is a significant step forward for the district's child nutritional services," remarked Tina Bryd, Jasper School District's Child Nutrition Director. "It recognizes the commitment the district is making to promoting nutrition, education, and community engagement through locally sourced foods. By offering students fresh, locally sourced food and educating them on where their food comes from, we strive to promote healthier eating habits and cultivate a deeper understanding of food production. This initiative supports our immediate goals of improving student health and lays the foundation for a more self-sufficient and informed adult population in our community."
The Jasper Farm to School Committee has some immediate goals they would like to accomplish. The first goal is to obtain and install greenhouse lights on the Jasper Campus. Another goal is to install raised beds. With greenhouse lights installed, we can grow produce year-round and provide a wider variety of vegetables to students year-round.
The Farm to School movement is rooted in the belief that connecting schools with local farms not only improves student nutrition but also supports local economies and fosters community engagement. By sourcing fresh, locally grown produce, schools can provide healthier meal options while educating students about where their food comes from and the benefits of eating nutritious foods.
During the retreat, the group collaborated with educators, nutritionists, farmers, and policymakers to develop tailored strategies for implementing the Farm to School Program. Workshops covered a range of topics, from procurement and menu planning to educational activities that promote agricultural literacy among students.
Guest speakers, including state senators and representatives, and the Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture, Wes Ward, emphasized the importance of community partnerships and legislative support in sustaining Farm to School initiatives. Their insights into funding opportunities and policy advocacy provided valuable guidance for the team as they navigated the complexities of launching and maintaining the program.
The commitment of the Jasper School District’s Farm to School Team represents a significant step towards building a healthier and more sustainable future for students and fostering a direct connection between local farms and school cafeterias.
